Before your first fire
The first cold front is when problems show up. Running through this list in early fall means you find them before you need the fireplace.
- • Open the damper fully and confirm it moves freely.
- • Look up the flue with a flashlight for nests, debris or heavy buildup.
- • Check the firebox for cracked panels, loose firebrick or gaps.
- • Look for water stains on the ceiling or wall near the chimney.
- • Confirm the cap is present and upright from the ground with binoculars.
- • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on every level.
- • Confirm your firewood is seasoned — split ends should be checked and cracked.
- • Clear combustibles from the hearth area.
- • Schedule an annual inspection and sweep before the season rush.
What not to do
Do not light a fire to test the chimney if you found buildup, an animal nest, water damage or a stuck damper. Do not seal a leak with roofing tar. Do not burn treated lumber, trash, cardboard or a Christmas tree.
